How can Sleep Apnea Affect Me?
The sleep disorder known as “sleep apnea” is marked by breathing pauses during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused when something obstructs the airway. The tongue falling to the back of the throat or collapsed airway tissues are frequent concerns. OSA is linked to a number of major health conditions, and can even threaten your life.
OSA is marked by the following symptoms:
- Gasping/choking during sleep.
- Dry/sore throat on waking.
- Loud/frequent snoring.
- Frequent morning headaches.
- Excessively drowsy during the day.
- Difficulty staying asleep or concentrating.
These symptoms, especially when chronic, should lead you to contact Dr. Ronald Fuhrmann. We can make an appointment to discuss treatment for sleep apnea.
What Treatments Are Available for Sleep Apnea?
When you consult with us at our Virginia Beach dental practice, we will discuss a variety of options for OSA. If your case is moderate (or mild), Dr. Ronald Fuhrmann many recommend the use of an appliance while sleeping. Appliances are designed to keep the airway open during sleeping.
Not all snorers have OSA. We can also provide snore guards which will keep snoring under control (and make everyone else in the house happy).
